Courses Required for Medical Transcription Program

Depending on the type of program you enter, three classes are the minimum number of courses required to get you into the workforce. Typically the first required class is a Medical Terminology course which will force you to memorize 1000’s of medical terms and even phrasing. By the end of the semester, the student should have a working knowledge of the medical biology and terminology used by medical personnel. Basic terms used in anatomy, physiology and pathology reports and the complicated phrasing for prescriptions.

The shortest course load should be geared to provide real life medical transcription experience for hospital settings or private practices. Once you have completed the course of study, you should be able to transcribe a variety of medical reports, such as history and physicals, discharge summaries, emergency room records, operation reports, and radiology reports dictated by health care professionals. Speed and accuracy will need to meet a minimum standard of proficiency.

If you have more time for study, a Medical Administrative Secretary program will take the transcriptionist skills up many notches qualifying the graduate for office management and medical coding positions. A study program of this nature offered by the Dawn Institute or DTCC will take several semesters.

Finally the Medical Assistant program offered at all the DTCC campuses will turn any student into an excellent transcriptionist and much more. This year long program with a full course load will prepare you to handle all aspects of medical business office management including many routine medical procedures such as EKG’s and administering injections. The latter skills may propel the transcriptionist deeper into the healthcare industry with abilities extending into clinical settings versus office work.
