As the medical transcription industry gets more competitive, it’s essential for medical transcriptionists to have formal training. Earning a degree or certificate from a respectable school will make you much more attractive to employers and will help you earn a higher salary through out you career.

Choosing the Right Medical Transcription School
There are many schools, both online and on campuses, which offer medical transcription education. When looking for MT schools, there are several plans to follow. To compare different programs, get information packets from local community colleges that describe their program clearly. If you are choosing to study online or through distance education, do the same. Look carefully through the information packets that these schools send you through e-mail or by other means. Review information about the curriculum they provide, what types of services the school will offer their students (many schools will offer you the moon but be careful!) and of course, tuition rates. As you might know, there are many diploma mills on the Internet. You don’t want a diploma hanging on the wall that carries no clout in the MT industry.
Like a doctor, you will be learning appropriate medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology. As an MT, you must learn good grammar, spelling, medical abbreviations and appropriate use of language. You must also find a MT school that focuses strongly on practical application; that is, after all the book learning is done, you must PRACTICE your newfound knowledge. You have been to the doctor – you know how she or he talks. Many doctors slur their speech (before or after the three-martini lunch), they may use run-on sentences and poor grammar. The reality is that practical application is equivalent to foreign language learning and application. I taught foreign languages for twenty-five years and many of my students were under the false impression that upon leaving my classroom, they would be able to walk into a hotel in Bogotá, Colombia and rattle off everything they had learned. Unfortunately, my voice (or the voice of the occasional native speaker on CDs) may not be exactly like what my student is experiencing at the Bogotá Hilton.
Financial Aid and Career Services
Before deciding on the right school for you, you must investigate if there are job assistance programs and if the MT companies recruit at the school of your choice. If you want a good job with a good company, you must do the requisite investigational footwork and find that MT school that will give you the advantage over the other graduate. A solid medical transcription school will help you earn a higher medical transcriptionist salary and put you on the path to certification.
